PinDrop Travel Trailers, manufactured in Arizona, are an example of the breadth of Arizona’s manufacturing sector, which includes everything from semiconductors to consumer goods to food and beverage and everything in between.
PinDrop was a finalist in the Arizona Manufacturers Council recent Hottest Thing Made in Arizona contest.
Here’s a Q&A with PinDrop’s Founder Tim Elinski about the growth of his company and where PinDrop is headed.
̳: How did PinDrop Travel Trailers start?
PinDrop Founder Tim Elinski: For many years I was a building contractor, but I suffered from a very serious camping addiction. At some point, at the intersection of my love for the trades and my need to go camping, I decided to take it seriously. My wife and I would travel to remote and rugged corners in our beloved 1952 Happy Home travel trailer, a canned ham style camper that was B-grade but very adorable.
The memories we made traveling around in that camper were priceless, and we really got every last penny of value from the $200 spent on its purchase. However, the time to retire the camper was due. And a road trip to visit family in Montana was on the horizon. Faced with the unpleasant proposition of spending the next three weeks setting up a tent and hauling out the kitchenware, I decided to build the camper design that had been rolling around in my head for so many years. I locked myself in my shop, and created the trailer that solved all the inconveniences we had experienced with the 1952 Happy Home, but kept all the beautiful elements that amplified our experience in the outdoors.
I emerged with a prototype that raised a lot of eyebrows on the road, and that’s when we knew we had something: an incredible design, fully solar powered and self contained, able to stow 44 gallons of freshwater, a full kitchen, super insulated cabin, and ability to sleep six comfortably and carry adventure gear such as kayaks and mountain bikes. It was time to introduce our product to outdoor enthusiasts!
CBN: Why did you choose Arizona to do business?
Elinksi: I am an Arizona native, so setting up shop in my home state was an easy decision. I’ve lived in other states and overseas but the West is the best, especially when it comes to the outdoor lifestyle.
We chose to headquarter PinDrop® intentionally in rural historic Miami, Arizona (a town that few have ever even heard of) for a couple reasons. First, I grew up in rural Arizona and recall when the sawmill shut down operations in my hometown. The closure and loss of jobs dramatically changed our community, and not for the better. Providing opportunity in rural Arizona is very important to us, as it gives the means for families to continue to live and work and carry on the traditions in their chosen community. Secondly, we manufacture Pin Drop Travel Trailers at the gateway of the Pinal Mountain range, one of Arizona’s best sky islands, the Sierra Anchas Wilderness, and thousands of miles of Tonto National Forest, which makes product testing very convenient.
Our customers always have a great experience when they come in for delivery day. We have a lovely, restored historic home (the Cactus Alley) where they can stay a night and relax before going through their PinDrop® the next day and heading home. It’s a one of a kind experience in an historic community that you just can’t get in a metro environment.
CBN: Can PinDrop fans anticipate new models?
Elinski: Absolutely! Each unit that goes out the door is our best yet. We are constantly evolving and adding features and upgrades that our customers request based on their experience using the product in the wild.
Initially, I built our first prototype for my family and me. Turns out, it was widely admired as an amazing design. Once we began production, our first rental fleet taught us a lot about what features worked better than others, and our loyal customers have provided great feedback that has helped us solidify our position as an award winning manufacturer, Customer Champion, and Co-100 Honoree by the U.S. ̳of Commerce.
We have taken the classic, nostalgic Teardrop design and fully integrated it into the new century without losing the charm. Our product appeals to both retired couples looking to leisurely explore the National Parks, and the rugged overland adventurer who wants to be off grid in the middle of nowhere. Upgrades are available to satisfy all campers.
CBN: How does the future look for the company? Are you optimistic?
Elinski: Pin Drop’s future looks great, and of course I’m optimistic…I’m an entrepreneur! We are manufacturing in a historic community that was once the economic powerhouse of Arizona. We are manufacturing in an historic, repurposed building that has housed countless other enterprises in a community that has rebuilt itself through many generations. There is an unrivaled pride that comes from manufacturing in Miami, AZ. We build the nation’s best teardrop style camper in a community with a population of 1,500. It’s fun to punch above our weight class.
